Daylilies

Story of the Painting
"I grew this in my garden. Like Bearded Iris, Daylilies come in a myriad of colors and like Bearded Iris they are not likely to be available at a florist. They are one of my favorite flowers to paint. The scientific name for Daylily is Hemorocallis, meaning "beautiful for a day." Each flower, which can be quite substantial and some are quite large, lives only for a single day. At night, the strong blossom seems to melt, resembling wet colored tissue paper. However, there are many Daylily flower buds on each scape (stalk). So I try not to pick a scape until most buds have matured. A mature plant can have many scapes, hence a great many flowers over the course of its bloom. If there are many buds left on the scape, I often pick the flowers and float them in bowls of water where they will be beautiful for the day into the evening. Daylilies have few pests and are easy to grow in the garden. This painting has been purchased."
